Maraisburg masjid Golf day – 85 year old’s Goolam Richard’s Hole-In-One
The name of Goolam Richard’s will always be remembered at the GoldFields West Golf Club when his name goes up on the wall of fame for holes-in-one. Affectionately known as “Uncle Gooly”, Richards has been playing golf for +- 60 years, starting as a young man during the apartheid days at Huddle Park Golf course in the East Rand.
Uncle Gooly recalls how he struggled during the old days having to wait for all the white players to finish before he could Tee-off, stopping to have his half way meal that he jokingly refers to as the “Brown Cow” ( a mixture of Coke and Milk). Uncle Gooly smiles when he recalls how he played with Gary Player and Vijay Singh when he managed the Lenasia Country Club.
Playing off a 17 handicap in the Maraisburg Masjid Fundraising Golf Day on Sunday 22 April 2012 , Uncle Gooly took out his 7 wood and hit the perfect Tee shot as his playing partners cheered the ball into the hole. Spontaneous celebrations rang around the course as Uncle Gooly is lifted into the air to celebrate this remarkable achievement.
Uncle Gooly was greeted by a standing ovation and much admiration as he walked up to collect his prize during the Gala Lunch. The Maraisburg Masjid Golf day is an annual event held to raise funds for the maintenance and day to day costs of the Masjid. Attracting players young and old, the tournament was hailed by all as a huge success, mainly due to the warm hospitality, delicious food and sense of community and friendship.
Moulana Tohier Kara, the event organiser, has praised the generosity of players, the tournament sponsors, and the members of the Maraisburg community for rallying together for this worthy cause. “ We are humbled by the willingness of our sponsors to donate to this event, and we are hoping that more sponsors come forward for next year’s Golf day” say’s Moulana Kara.
The spectacular hole-in-one, perfectly executed by the oldest golfer in the community, Uncle Goolam “Gooly” Richards will always be remembered by all present at the Maraisburg Masjid Fundraising Golf Day.
